Synonyms for Good

LEARN GOOD WORDS.
  • Good is an adjective. It means high quality or proper and correct.
  • Good can also be a noun. In one sense, it means prosperity or well-being. In the other sense, a good is a commodity.

Good is both an adjective and a noun. It also has a lot of synonyms. Why? Because depending on the word it modifies and the context in which it’s used, it can be replaced by an incredible number of words.

Think about it. Would you say that “competent” is a synonym for good? You would if you’re talking about people who are good at what they do. You might also call them skillful, or efficient, or a number of other words. So depending on how it’s used and the meaning it takes on, the full list of synonyms for good would be next to impossible to compile.

Synonyms for Good the Adjective

But that shouldn’t stop us from trying. Let’s see how far we can get with the adjective good and the situation we already mentioned—talking about people who are good at what they do. We observed that they can be called skillful, competent, and efficient. What else can we call them? Someone who is good at a job is surely capable or adept. They can be satisfactory, talented, reliable, and proficient. They can also be an ace, first-class, or even a rock-star.

What words would you use to describe a good movie? You can call it excellent, fine, enjoyable, and splendid. But that’s not all—you might call it awesome, great, admirable, and pleasing. If you’re talking about high-quality food and drink, however, you might use fine and excellent instead of good, but you could also say it’s choice, superior, or even exquisite.

Let’s say you have a good idea for a project that would be good for your community. You can replace the good that modifies “idea” with words like constructive, useful, sound, valuable, or sensible. The other good can be replaced with words such as positive, beneficial, propitious, or advantageous. Something that’s good for you is something that’s healthy, helpful, or useful.

We also use good for matters of propriety and morals. When your child has been good during a car ride, you can say she’s been well-behaved, obedient, polite, or mannerly. Someone who is a good person might also be described as is kind, gracious, charitable, or honest. It all depends on which qualities you admire most in people. A good friend is someone who is dependable—you might think of him as a true friend, a real friend, or a sound friend. And if your friend is always in a good mood, you can call him cheerful, pleasant, or happy.

Synonyms for Good the Noun

How many books have been written about the struggle between Good and Evil? The good in this context is a noun, and it means, well, everything that’s good. If you were to replace it with a word or two, you might use virtue, morality, goodness, rectitude, righteousness, or uprightness.

Ever felt like you’re too smart for your own good? In this sense, good means benefit, but can also be broadened to include words like gain, advantage, well-being, or even interest.

Lastly, a good is also something you can manufacture and sell. It’s a commodity, piece of merchandise, or ware. You can also use the word good to mean your personal property, especially the kind you can carry, and usually in plural. So in that sense, its synonyms include belongings, personal effects, possessions, movables, or simply—things.
